Bushings and Sleeves

A bushing fills the gap between a holder bore that is too big and a tool shank that is too small. It costs a few dollars and it saves buying a second holder for one odd size — which is why most lathe and mill setups have a handful of them in a drawer.

Two numbers pick the part. The outside diameter has to match the bore of your boring bar holder or milling holder. The inside diameter has to match the shank of the tool going in. Everything else is detail.

Type B or Type C

Split sleeve, Type B. Slit along its length, so it closes around the tool as the holder clamps down. The grip is spread around the shank rather than concentrated in one spot.

Bushing with opening, Type C. Has a window cut through the wall, so the holder's clamping screw reaches the tool directly through the sleeve instead of pressing on it.

If your holder clamps with a screw that needs to bear on the tool itself, you want Type C. If it clamps all the way round, Type B. When in doubt, look at how the holder grips.

In theory, and in practice

In theory a bushing adds one more joint to the stack, so a little runout and a little less rigidity than putting the right-sized tool straight into the holder.

In practice it is almost never what limits a job. We run anti-vibration boring bars through sleeves in our own shop and they perform the way they are supposed to. If a setup is chattering or a bore is out, the sleeve is a long way down the list of suspects.

What actually costs you is a chip trapped between the sleeve and the bore. That is worth more runout than every tolerance on this page put together, and it takes ten seconds to prevent. Wipe both, and seat the tool along the full length of the sleeve rather than just in the front of it.
