excl. taxes1/8" (0.125", 3.175 mm) is the size where small work gets done - engraving, lettering, narrow slots, small pockets, fine contours and finishing passes on detail that a 1/4" tool cannot reach. It is also the size that breaks most often, because at this diameter everything that goes wrong in a cut shows up faster.
The range below covers square, corner radius (bull nose), ball nose and chamfer profiles in 2, 3 and 4 flutes, coated and uncoated, on a 1/8" shank. Flute length, coating and corner radius are on each product page.
Carbide wants surface speed, and surface speed at a small diameter means rpm. As a rule of thumb, a 1/8" carbide end mill running 300 SFM in steel needs roughly 9,000 rpm; in aluminum at 800 SFM it wants more than 24,000. A machine that tops out at 6,000 rpm cannot get there, and the tool ends up rubbing instead of cutting - which work-hardens the material and rounds the edge off in minutes.
If your spindle is limited, drop the surface speed and the chip load together, keep the depth of cut light and accept a slower job. What does not work is running the recommended feed per tooth at half the recommended rpm.
Deflection rises with the cube of unsupported length, so an extra 1/4" of stick-out on a 1/8" tool costs far more rigidity than the same 1/4" on a 1/2" tool. Hold the shortest tool that reaches, clamp as deep in the collet as the geometry allows, and take depth in several passes rather than one.
A 1/8" shank runs in any ER collet series that covers it - ER11 through ER32 - and in 1/8" end mill holders. A worn or dirty collet costs runout, and runout at this diameter loads one flute and unloads the other, which is how a small cutter snaps.
The flute valley on a 1/8" cutter is small, so chips have very little room to leave. In aluminum and other non-ferrous material use 2 or 3 flutes with air or coolant blowing chips clear - recut chips are the most common cause of a broken small end mill. In steel and stainless the chips are shorter and 4 flutes give a better finish and more edges in the cut.
